CASE STUDY: Sports and the Socialization of Boys & Men

1) You will begin preparing your case study research by first reading all the assigned materials for that class day. These are the texts everyone in class will read in advance of your session. These reading will introduce you to some important concepts, terms, and ideas.

2) You may want to preview the video we will be screening in class, Tough Guise. It has an excellent online study guide to get you started. The Study Guide is found at:

3) Your case study should research the issue of sports: children's teams, professional sports, spectatorship of sports and the issues related to how men are socialized into gender roles. One interesting example is the dramatic rise in violence against women during SuperBowl Sunday. There are many good resources out there to research. You will want to look for examples from sport participation, media representation, etc. The professor has placed the following books on reserve in the library for you to copy and study. Some essays that will start you on the way with concepts and theories are:

  • "Masculinities and Athletic Careers" Michael Messner in Race Class and Gender eds. Andersen and Collins, 4th Ed.
  • "A New Vision of Masculinity" Cooper Thompson in Race Class and Gender eds. Andersen and Collins, 4th Ed.
  • "Getting Off on Feminism," Jason Schultz in Race Class and Gender eds. Andersen and Collins, 4th Ed.
  • "Understanding and Fighting Sexism: A Call to Men," Blood, Tuttle, Lakey in Race Class and Gender, eds. Andersen and Collins, 4th Ed.
  • Julius Lester, "Being a Boy," in Feminist Frameworks, eds. Jaggar & Rothenberg
  • William H. Becker, "Feminism's Personal Questions--for Men," in Feminist Frameworks eds. Jaggar & Rothenberg
